It used to be in the days gone by that gambling happened in traditional casinos made from bricks and cement! A casino is a place where individuals gather to gamble on various types of game. It has been this way for centuries until recently, with the help of the forever evolving Internet, gambling was made available to virtually anyone.

In 1994 a company by the name of Microgaming established the first online gaming software. Eventually in 1996 this service was made available to the public. When one thinks of online gaming today, virtually all casino game types are available, but in the earlier days the games were very limited to the most popular. Games such as blackjack, baccarat, jacks, craps, and five line slots where pretty much all one could find in the prototype online casinos. Slowly but surely, games were added into the database making the online casino what it is today.

At first, gambling online was shrouded with trust issues and the companies worked very hard to remain anonymous. There were a few reasons for this. First off in the 90’s there were many attempts to shut down these operations due to scepticism over the concept of online gaming. Also there were many owners who were more than just a little shady, not really caring about the customer but only about how they could earn the big bucks for themselves... in a dishonest way. Lastly, online casinos were a prime target for many criminals would would hack online casinos in order to extort money from the owners.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of using an online casino. One advantage is that anyone, can gamble from anywhere in the world. You now don’t have to travel half way around the world to get to Vegas. Now you can walk 5 feet to your computer, wearing nothing but your underwear holding a slice of pizza, make a few clicks and you can be rolling in the the big bucks. Now with this advantage comes a major disadvantage. It is now incredibly easy for youngsters, who aren’t legally old enough, to gamble. It’s as simple as memorising mum or dad’s credit card number and then having a blow out for a month, until the credit bill shows up and caused major unrest within the family. Another great thing about today’s casinos is the ability to make immediate payments. In the early beginnings, online gambling was a slow process and it would sometimes take as long as two weeks for a company to pay out, where as now, as soon as you win money it is transferred directly into your savings account or to an account you have set up with the corporation.

Online gambling can certainly come with problems. It is always said that gambling is a dangerous pastime in general. You don’t see the bank account rolling down when you spend money online, and if you aren’t great with budgeting, or if you don’t know when to say ‘no’ playing online casino games can easily get a person in some serious financial trouble.
