Why I decided to on going to lectures in my pyjamas

When I finally left college after three years, 3 A levels, 6 AS levels and an access course I couldn’t imagine going to university for another 3 years. I had already spent 14 years in education and I felt like I was ready to get a job and earn some real money.

I worked various jobs in the customer service industry and there I stayed for a couple of years saving money and working hard. I worked a few bar jobs and did a little bit of temping work every now and again but I found that I couldn’t go for the jobs that I really wanted because I did not posses a degree qualification. I felt like I had so much more to offer employers than I was currently able to give due to my lack of university education.

With more and more people going to university these days it is a fairly standard requirement for many jobs that you have a degree. Even though I knew I was capable of getting into most universities as my GCSE and A-Level qualifications were good I just could not get my head round the idea of going back into a classroom.

After going traveling for a year with the money I had saved from my bar jobs I felt like I was ready for a new challenge and a change of direction. As I wanted to carry on living at home and still have the time to earn the money I had been accustomed to I still felt like going away to university was not the best option for me. After doing a little internet research I started to think about the possibilities of home learning via an online university. That way I could keep a full or part time job and study in the hours and in the time that suited me and I wouldn’t even have to get up early in the morning for classes.

The more I thought about the flexibility and opportunity online university courses could offer me the more I knew that this was the right decision to take. A quality resource was Kaplan Distance Learning.

I did some research on my laptop and found a great online university called Kaplan. The business style courses would compliment the A level subjects I had studied and I felt as though this was most suited to my needs. I had to apply like I would have done to a ‘normal’ university by submitting my work experience achievements and relevant qualifications and luckily I was awarded a place in one of their popular subscribed courses. As there are only ever about 25 people in a class rather than hundreds as I probably would have experienced if I had chosen the regular route, I felt as though I am receiving thorough attention and all the help that I need. I am really looking forward to completing my degree and applying for the jobs that I believe are within my potential

I know that I am lucky to earn the money I need to live the lifestyle I choose whilst I study for my degree. I don’t have to endure beans on toast for every meal and get to go to lectures in my pyjamas, what more could I ask for?
